We have many new folks moving into Marlow and we extend a hearty welcome! In these busy times, though, even some long-time residents do not know that our small bucolic town has a Historical Society or that we have a Marlow History Museum. Indeed we do. The Historical Society was organized in 1976 as a 501c-3 non-profit and has been active in the community for those 33 years. Our museum is open during the warm months beginning in May with an Open House during the Memorial Day Activities. Our regular museum hours on every third Sunday from 9:30 am – 12 noon continue until October. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Methodist Chapel on the banks of Tin Shop Pond. The museum is also open by appointment by calling 446-6201. The Society owns two historic structures: The Hearse House on Church Street, recently stabilized and painted, and Murray Hall on Forest Rd. The Society acquired Murray Hall in 2002 and we have raised $26,000 for its restoration. All our work is done by volunteers giving their time to fulfill our mission to identify, restore, and preserve Marlow’s historic sites and collect, conserve, and share Marlow’s artifacts, documents, and history. We are currently entering into a database our books, pamphlets and photographs. Last year we initiated a petition warrant article to install a fire alarm system in Jones Hall, which is listed on the National Historic Register. This articled passed and the system is in place. We also maintain our popular website, marlowhistoricalsociety.org A list of all our activities is available from any member. Each year we sponsor events and activities of a historical nature such as NH Humanities Council speaker Glen Knoblock on Cemeteries, collecting oral histories, and a Living History tour of the West Yard Cemetery. We also sponsor programs and beautification projects such as planting tulips and daffodils around the 13 elm trees that we planted in 2006, the Marlow Christmas Radio Show, the Art Exhibition in the fall, and the Monadnock Music Concert and Pre-Concert Dinner in the summer. The purpose of the Society is to restore and preserve buildings in Marlow having historical and or architectural significance which are open to the public, and to collect and preserve materials which establish or illustrate facts pertaining to the history of Marlow. The Society is a 501c3 non-profit organizations. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter which is sent to its members. It also maintains a museum and collection of archival materials housed on the second floor of the Methodist Chapel building. The museum is open regularly from Memorial Day through mid-October on Thursday afternoons, from 3-5 PM, and may be visited at other times by appointment with the President. We welcome new members and encourage you to join us in our pursuit of Marlow’s history. Please feel free to call our membership chairman, Maria Baril, at 446-2292 or e-mail the society at marlowhs@earthlink.net. |
