Marlow Historical Society Minutes & Reports

November 2007

Executive Board Meeting / Marlow Historical Society / November 6, 2007 / 6:30 PM

Mary, Art, Pam, Gen, and Loisanne were present. The meeting began at 6:37 PM. Loisanne read the Secretary’s Report which was accepted amended. Mary read the Treasurer’s report and responded to related questions. The report was accepted as read.

OLD BUSINESS:

Liberty Elm reports that it is fine to plant the three remaining elms this year, Mary noted that the unplanted ones appear even healthier than the ones which had been planted earlier, so there is no hurry, One will go where the cherry tree stood to the right of Jones Hall. One will go on the ”island” between the cafe and Andreason’s place. One will be planted at Perkins School.

The Hearse House has $301.00 in its conservation account. In addition, Art has volunteered to purchase the paint. Bucky’s estimate for scraping and painting is $300.00.

NEW BUSINESS:

The old Burnap House on Mill Street which was recently purchased by Audio Accessories is scheduled to be burned soon. Mary has done extensive research on James Burnap and his roles in the local and state economy and politics. Rising from unfortunate circumstances to become a successful businessman and statesman, he is Marlow's own “Horatio Alger” if not Dale Carneige. Mary has contacted the owners in an attempt to save this historic site, suggesting that the owners might give MHS the building and lease MHS the land. MHS, for its part, would set up a committee to oversee the property and open a new preservation project. It appears to need a roof, clapboards, and paint, much as Murray Hall did. At the moment, it wears asbestos shingles. We understand that the property stands on residential land. We are open to suggestions and willing to negotiate.

We discussed programming for 2008. Gen turned the Humanities Council Program book over to Pam. We hope to sponsor two Humanities Programs this year. Although the programs are excellent, the cost to us is minimal.

Mary suggested that we ask Linda Feuderer to speak with us. Marlow’s Linda Feuderer is now hired by the State of New Hampshire as an archaeologist. She might speak to us about how to recognize archaeological site, what to watch for, what to do, and, just as important, what not to do about such a site, Gen had several suggestions including a tour of the Cheshire County Historical Society in the spring or summer and a fall tour of Marlow’s three cemeteries. She suggested that Loisanne could speak on the MHS Forum. She also suggested a Fort #4 tour,Pam asked about the need for student volunteers. Could Marlow’s young adults who attend Keene High School meet some of their civil service requirements by doing such tasks as scraping paint and helping plant and/or stake trees? We agreed that this would be a good possibility. Loisanne suggested that some might serve immediately by helping the crafters carry material in and out of Jones Hall for Christmas on the Pond.

To prepare for Christmas on the Pond, Mary will purchase wreaths for Jones Hall and the Odd Fellows. Decoration with candles and greens will be Saturday morning before Sunday’s event.

For Marlow’s December Christmas celebration, which comes early this year, Dec. first. Loisanne will write a "Rudolph in Marlow" skit to be a sequel to last year’s fun. Mary will round up musicians and readers. Candy has volunteered to do a reading and, once again, do the Bridget sound effects.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM. The next Executive Meeting will be on Tuesday,
Jan. 8th.

Respectfully submitted,
Loisanne Foster
