Executive
Board Meeting /
Marlow Historical Society
/ Oct.
3, 2006
The
meeting began at 6:47 PM. Mary Blank, Loisanne Foster, Art Schmid, and
Candy Wiggum was present.
Loisanne
read the Secretary’s Report, which was accepted as read. Mary read and
explained the Treasurer’s Report, which was accepted as read.
Old Business:
The
first issue was, now that we have passed the Harvest Festival, how much
of our funds can we afford to allocate for the Murray Hall painting?
Candy proposed $400.00, which will leave $900.00 still owed. We agreed
unanimously. Mary proposed that she and Al would “float” the $900.00
as an interest-free loan which we can repay as we are able. That way, we
are able to pay Bucky White, who has completed the work, immediately.
Wally
and Jennifer Giffin have given us $300.00 toward the Elm Tree Project
“or whatever use you see fit.” Since we already have enough
donations to cover the purchase, planting, and care of the elms, we will
put the Giffin’s $300.00 toward the Murray hall painting.
The
elm trees are being planted with much help from Tony Davis, Patrick
Mooney, and Chucky Elliott
Mary
and Loisanne divided the list of thank you notes to be written to the
many who have donated to the Elm Tree Project and the conservation of
the Marlow Album Quilt.
For
preserving the album quilt, we decided to go with Option #4, that is to
stabilize the fabric by replacing the backing and filling and covering
the front with fine tulle so that it remains undisturbed and the
signatures could be read through it. This will cost about $250.00. We
hope to be able to ask Kathy Harvey of Swanzey to begin the quilt
conservation in January 2007. Bob Nichols (descendent of the Nichols of
Nichols and Newton Store) continues to research the names on the quilt
and has done a remarkable job establishing the identity of each
signature and the relationships among them.
The
Elm Tree Dedication will be on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2:00 PM. Invitations
will be sent to those who donated toward the project. There will be
Sentinel coverage and their photographer, Steve Hooper, will be present
for the occasion.
Kevin
Warren, local photographer, has given MHS a photograph of the Stoddard
Fire Tower, a location which played an important role in the Marlow 1941
Fire.
Jim
Strickland has kindly given us the V.F.W. list of veterans buried in
Marlow. This is now posted on the MHS Forum. We will pursue adding to
the list those who went to war from Marlow, but are not buried here.
We
are prepared to participate in the HSCC November project on New
Hampshire meetinghouses built before 1850. Loisanne has done the
research and writing. For artifacts we will have hymnals, a coin, post
cards, a puzzle, photographs, and a mustache cup! The project will
include a publication, an exhibit, a driving tour map, and a speaker on
opening night.
New
Business:
In
mid-October, we will host four visitors from Marlow, Oklahoma. We will
exchange materials - post cards and other items from our booth. Loisanne
will copy some historical pictures for them. We are also in contact with
citizens of Marlow, England and should be receiving a package from them
soon.
We
began to plan our part in a Christmas program for this year. Candy
suggested that we not do it by ourselves, but talk to the Women’s
Societies and Odd Fellows. Mary proposed as “Christmas radio program
with funny commercials and lots of music.” We could ask Kate McNally
and Jonathan Reinhardt to help. The Cold River Ranchers and The Shanty
Town Four were suggested as participants.
The
triangle of land belonging to the town on the north side of town along
route 10 (across from what was the Marlow Cafe) was discussed as a
possible site for an elm and also as an area in need of landscaping.
This was tabled for further discussion.
The
meeting was adjourned at about 8:00 PM.
Respectfully
submitted,
Loisanne Foster
